Plazi is an association supporting and promoting the development of persistent and openly accessible digital taxonomic literature, and maintains a digital taxonomic literature repository to enable archiving of taxonomic treatments. It fosters the creation of enhanced, linked TaxonX and TaxPub XML versions of treatments, participates in the development of new models for publishing taxonomic treatments in order to maximize interoperability with other relevant cyberinfrastructure components (eg. name servers, biodiversity resources, etc.), and advocates and educates about the vital importance of maintaining free and open access to scientific discourse and data. Its members are all leading experts in the field of biology, information technology, digital libraries, publishing and law. The servers are maintained in Switzerland, the USA and Germany. Funding has been provided from external funds such as GBIF, EoL and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
